Week 2 Throwback

Batman

This puts a cap on week 2 of The Dark Times, this week was the start of the daily creates (“Lets Get Creative!”; A Cat on Synthesizer, A Yodel, and An Eye Selfie) which added some creativity for each day. I for one really enjoyed the daily creates so much so that I would be waiting for the next day to be posted though I may not had time to do everyone.

This week we also created a Character Dossier, mine being called Shadow aka Darkness. I had a bit of fun creating this character by bouncing ideas with my roommate about Shadow. Learn more about Shadow in my Character Dossier Introduction.

Similar to the daily creates we had to do writing assignments which involved being creative (which I also enjoyed). We had to produce 8 pts worth of writing assignment, 3 pts being dedicated to our character. I dedicated The Police Beat and the Haiku It Up! assignments to Shadow. I also did the 10 Seconds of Thanks Assignment, Unphotographable, and the required Alternate Ending.

Lastly was the most dreaded part of this week was the Noir reading, although they were interesting the required reading “The Postman Always Rings Twice” was 68 pg long plus 3 more stories we had to read, which I think may be a bit excessive since this is not my only class I am enrolled in and we had other assignments to complete. Though they were great reads, let’s be a little more reasonable on the amount of stories to read. Here are my reflections on the Noir Readings.

Readings and Readings About Noir

I read the following four stories about Noir:

This is the story of a criminal investigator who become so involved with a crime that she mimics the victim as her fantasy. This disturbing, sinister story not only is dark it includes many components of noir, murder, sex, alcohol, crime solving, and mystery. The alcoholic detective has a love interest with multiple guys at different stages, and for some reason pulls confidence out of changing her appearance to imitate a murder victim Annabelle Clark. This is just an odd story.

  • The Postman Always Rings Twice by: James M. Cain

the_postman_always_rings_twiceIn this story the idea of Noir is prevalent. Femme fatale character, Cara, is involved with a bum Frank who both plot to kill her husband Nick. Each character seems to be somewhat of a con artist and sinister. Within this story there is plenty of deception, death and irony. The irony being both Cara and Nick dying in a car accident, both in the name of love.

This piece reminded me of a murder we read in my True Crime class “The Murder at Cherry Hill,” It was about a wife (Elise) who got a man (Jesse Strang) to kill her her husband (Whippie). Strang was charged for the murder and sentence to death though Elise was only accused of being an accomplice.

TheKillersIn this story noir is seen straight from the beginning, the wording “bright boy,” “ought,” “nigger” give an old time feel when people actually talked in this manner. On the third page murder and killing is already brought up immediately throwing us into the noir theme, on this page there is also a cartoon of men at a bar with hats and trench coat fitting into the noir theme. Though the hit men don’t kill Anderson, they do tie up Nick and Sam, the fact that there was hired hit men in black trench coats couldn’t be anymore noir.

TheShadowIf not obvious from the title The Shadow, noir is seen in this story in that there is this mysterious man who acts as a somewhat vigilante for the town they are located at. In this specific episode there is a lot of deception involved between the Dubrille, Martin, and Evan. In a twist Martin planned to kill Evan and Dubrille and blame it on Corvet though The Shadow knew of Corvet’s death and allowed the fighting to continue. Sadly Shadow and Dr. Evan are the only two who seem to be honest people in the story.

Caps: All these reading had in common was that there was a murder or attempted murder, each revolving around the theme of death and darkness. Bring my to conclude that death and darkness play great parts in the concept of noir. Each story also included small components of noir such as mysterious strangers, alcohol, sex, and plenty of deception.

Alternate Ending… 3pts

Pg.66

“Take it easy. Lie right out in the water. Don’t try to swim. I’ll tow you in.”

Call the guard I beg of you, he can call me an ambulance! They can rush me to the hospital and you can meet me there. Please, I love you but, please I need you to do this.

Once I got her to shore, I comforted her until the ambulance showed up. They believe her pain was due to stress induced contractions and that she would need to be taken to the hospital to try to prevent a miscarriage. I kissed her on the forehead and ran to the car so that I could meet her at the hospital.

There was a stand still on the way, I got stuck behind this car, I honked but there was no way to pass him. On the left there were cars coming towards me and I had no intention of slowing down for my love, so I quickly pulled right on the shoulder. I saw the culvert wall and tried to stop but the brakes failed. I immediately knew what she had done.

She didn’t trust me even after giving me a chance to kill her, she didn’t trust me. She set up this whole trip and swam so far out into the water on purpose, just so that I would get into the car. As I saw my life flashed before my eyes, I just thought to myself I should have seen this coming, she was a hell cat after all and this is what she does. Police on scene quickly ruled my wreckage an accident and Cara was not questioned.

When she got to the hospital she had a miscarriage. She no longer had any ties to me nor to the Greek. She was free and I guess that is all she truly wanted.

Inside Shadow Man

Shadow aka darkness (but prefers shadow) was born on October 31, 1990 in Salem, North Carolina. He is a shadow, dark inside and out. He can take any form though he prefers the form of a man wearing a snap-brim hat holding, his favorite possession, a shadow gun. He gets his name Shadow from his looks and for hiding in others shadows, which he loves to do. He is super stealthy when he wants to be which is always.

gun_shadow

He is single and has no children and doesn’t plan for that to change for a long time. He is a robber for a living though he love to rob jewelry stores and banks just for the thrill of it not because he has to.  Oddly enough for being a shadow, he loves shiny thing which explains his compulsion to steal things. His personal motto is “everything is for the taking.”

Shadow being artsy.
Shadow being artsy.

A few personal things about him are that his favorite food and drink is chocolate chip cookies and Arnold Palmer, if shiny was a color it would be his favorite though he likes the color black. His favorite book is 50 Shades of Grey though I am sure its only because of the title. He takes some inspiration from from his favorite movie Paranormal Activity.

Shadow caught hiding in others shadows for fun. It may be difficult to spot him.

Neighbors report seeing shadow following her around tormenting her. Causing their good friend to go nuts.

Shadow states ” I only followed her around because I wanted to talk to her though she kept ignoring me.”

Ella states “I felt this dark present following me where ever I go, and that it seemed like it had the power to touch and move things. I am still scared”

Prosecutors say charges for this incident and unrelated incidents may be pending.

Unphotographable Studious Student

Unphotographable– 2pts

This picture I did not take was of a young female student studying in the niches of the convergence center, turning out distractions, expanding her knowledge, and preparing for her future. One day she may be our boss, our co-worker, our neighbor, or our friend; one day she will be just about anything. And yet at first glace all you truly see is a girl with her head in a book.
