Picture Time

This week we were to take multiple pictures to capture different Noir elements such as:

  • the “Venetian Blind” effect
  • the grittiness of a built environment
  • dramatic use of shadows

Think about Photography

I absolutely love photography, I am not exactly sure why but all types of pictures get my attention. I am a very visual person I guess, I love the stories behind each picture.

When the fire starts to burn

I will admit I do take a ton of photos, many of them being extremely random and bad because I would do it in a rush to use them on snapchat.

Snaps

Though, I do also take a lot of nature pictures because mother earth is just so beautiful. I love to capture moments in which you think gosh how lucky are we to  live in such a beautiful place.

Hiking

In my room I have a mural of pictures of friends and family, I like to keep adding photos because when I get bored I can just look up and there is my friends, family, and other reminders of my life. I will say, I am probably not a very good photographer but I take picture mainly for myself since I will be the one looking back through them to remember the old days.

Mural

After reviewing the sources posted for photography, I have realized I probably should attempt to put some effort into taking pictures, or at the very least give the picture some meaning.

What’s in Shadow’s Bag?

What’s in your bag? -3pts

I emptied out Shadow’s bag and these are its contents.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/130724847@N06/16373854796/

  • A Napsack (in his favorite color)- Shadow is a thief and so half the stuff in his bag isn’t his. He carries this sack to place all his stolen goodies in.
  • Shades- He always carries his shade to complete his outfit and aide his disguise. Shadow secretly thinks he is a bad ass with them on though he’s really not.
  • Gloves- Shadow always carries gloves because he never wants to leave evidence at the scene of a crime. He also believes they are stylish and fits is “image.”
  • Knife- He always carries a backup weapon around you never know when you will be in a sticky situation.
  • Stolen Money- Again, Shadow is a thief, this is the money from people he pick-pocketed today.
  • A Satchel- Shadow saw the gold chain from the purse and fell in love. He apparently robbed the purse from a rich, drunk lady. He said it was like stealing candy from and baby.
  • Candy- He said the metaphor caused him to crave candy.
  • Jewelry (a pearl necklace, a diamond necklace, gold earrings, and a gold bracelet)- He stole from his favorite jewelry store. He plans to sell them  later on once the heat settles down.

-Don’t worry I will return all the items this klepto stole to their rightful owners. Except the candy, I am keeping that, sorry.

Wrap-Up on Week 3

Batman

This week on The Dark Times: a photo safari, thoughts on photography, reflection on noir and visual storytelling, visual assignments, and the daily creates. May be too soon to say but this may have been the best week ever, this class is awesome!

We were asked to reflect on photography, and how it is incorporated in our lives. I take a lot of photos as you will learn making this section really exciting for me. Hope we do more of this later in the semester.

As usual I love doing the daily create for the week (The Creative Days), I was able to do all of them Monday-Sunday and had a blast! I will probably continue to try to do every one for each week. My favorite on this week would definitely be Monday- Droodle at Meeting (or Elsewhere).

I also greatly enjoyed the photo safari, Abigail and I went out a few times to strictly go photograph the beauty that is of Mary Washington and Fredericksburg. We mainly went out at night to fit the noir theme as well that was our only free time.

This week we had to create 10pts worth of visual assignments, 5pts dedicated to my character, Shadow. Shadow’s assignments were What’s in Your Bag? (3pts), Pencil vs Camera (2pts), and a Warning Poster (3pts). The other visuals done were to complete the 10pts, 10 Step Photo Challenge (3pts) and A Whole New World (2pts). I love that most of these assignments were to take pictures because it gave me an excuse to go outside and capture pictures of Mary Wash.

Lastly I watched 2 noir movies this week Killer’s Kiss and Chinatown. After watching these movies we then had to discuss how they demonstrate noir throughout the movies. Read my blog post “Movie Night!” if you want to learn more about it.

10 Pictures in 10 Steps

10 Step Photo Challenge– 3 pts

Challenge: Take 10 steps and a picture at each step, use different angles and directions. Create a collage out of the pictures.

This photos were taken around Arrington, while my roommate and I went out for a walk. I thought it would be the perfect time to get this assignment done. I tried to get as many different angles as I could think of that would be interesting. Here is the result of the photo-shoot.

Movie Night!

Killer’s Kiss is about a man (Davey) who is a boxer and is in love with his neighbor (Gloria) who is a hall dancer, they planned to run away together. Gloria has an abusive relationship with a gangster (Vincent) she doesn’t like. (Vincent is shown below.)

Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 9.44.49 PMDavey ends up protecting her one night from Vincent, Vincent is then angry at Davey and attempts to kill him but accidentally murders Davey’s boss.

This movie is so noir in that it is in black and white and the multiple scenes that are very dark.

Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 9.48.16 PM Noir is also seen in the plot in that the plot is about a couple and a jealous man trying to break them up. The bad guy (Vincent) is killed in the end by Gloria’s lover Davey (the good guy). The cigarettes and outfits worn throughout the movie also help build on the noir theme.

Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 9.45.49 PM

Chinatown is about a private investigator called Jake Gittes who was hired to watch Mr. Mulwray. Mrs. Mulwray was suspicious of an affair. Later in a plot twist it is revealed that Mulwray girlfriend is Evelyn’s daughter and sister.

This movie has plenty of noir elements such as a femme fatale character (Evelyn), the clothing worn throughout the movie (the hats and suit), and smoking.

Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 11.22.26 PM

The story has many parts to it that can only truly be understood when watching the movie, the story is part mystery and part drama making this the perfect representation of noir.Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 11.24.34 PM
